Another Flop for Fiorina

10/28 GOP Presidential Debate

Before the first debate, Carly Fiorina was seen as just another candidate without a chance in a crowded Republican field.  She proved herself that night, however, as she moved up from junior varsity competition into a spot with the big guys in the second debate.  She held her own in this arena and now as we approached the third debate; Fiorina was viewed as a true contender.  She was expected to dazzle the country once again as she showed us why she had been appointed CEO of HP: her ability to debate, persuade, and appeal.  However, Fiorina failed to shine, as the debate focused on economic policy and much of her time was spent challenging her record as CEO.

In past debates, Fiorina has shone with her quick witted one liners and counter-attacks to Trump.  However, in this debate, Fiorina never had this chance.  She tried to appeal to the average American under claims of bringing the average citizens back into government, rather than let Washington be controlled by a political bureaucracy; she tried to paint herself as a Washington outsider. However, she failed to show any reason why she is a better candidate than Ben Carson or Donald Trump, both fellow Washington outsiders whom she trails dramatically in the polls. Fiorina found herself blending into the red sea of an overcrowded stage.

In the past, Fiorina has used her unique trait of being a woman on the Republican stage to her advantage, appealing to Republican conservatism as she attacked Planned Parenthood in the prior debate under female perspective.  This time around, she tried to portray herself as an advocate for all women, trying to appeal to the oh-so-desired female vote that Republicans repeatedly fail to gain.  Fiorina was close to being successful in this objective before switching to bashing Hillary Clinton.  By transforming from the guardian of all women to an aggressive Hillary-hater, she appeared a contradiction.  If Fiorina continues to contradict herself, she will appear like any other Washington politician- a flip-flopper, losing the outsider CEO perspective she had been boasting about.

It was a disappointing night, as Fiorina failed to impress.  Her witty disses at Donald Trump were greatly missed, as the debate delved into numbers, boring and confusing the average American at home.  Despite her poor performance, it’s important not to count Fiorina out.  She has proved herself to be a surprising candidate in the past and it would not be a shock if Fiorina wows the country once again at the next debate.
