Marco Rubio Is More Than Good Looks

I have to admit, I originally choose to cover Marco Rubio because he is aesthetically pleasing and I am very shallow. I didn’t have a lot of background on his political views prior to this debate and his baby face was enough to convince me.That being said, I was surprised at his defiance of Trump, specificity of answers for an immigration plan, and views on foreign problems.

Rubio started out with his opening statement making a joke of the California drought.  He is already being criticized for this.

On the issue of the refugees, Rubio declares we should only send out our military if we can win, a direct attack on all the troops lost on the wars under George W. Bush with his brother.  Rubio also made a statement that got many on his side: that speaking Spanish is important. I agree with Rubio. With 37 million American’s speaking Spanish, making it the most common non-English language in America, being able to communication with that large number of people is important. Trump fired back on Rubio and declared that only English should be spoken in America to the irony of the “melting pot” idea of the United States. We are a mix, and our cultural differences are what define us as a country.

Rubio says the next person we have in office needs to know the issues by day one. He says we live in dangerous times, and that with North Korea fostering and China becoming a greater front (note his use of the word “gangstas” ) the next president needs to know the issues by day one. Trump fought him on this comment, saying that being a businessman will allow him to know the issues. Yes Trump, you’re rich. We get it.

However, one main difference between Rubio and Trump istheir plans on illegal immigration. Trump declares that we need to build a wall and deport all the illegal immigrant, while Rubio lists three issues we have with illegal immigration: us being too generous of a country, a faulty immigration system that makes it hard for people to enter, and the fact people are already here illegally. He urges that we secure our borders, modernize our immigration system, and take compassion on those who are already here, unless they are criminals. Rubio impressed me as a candidate that supports his issues… and supports them with understanding and resolve to fix.

Although Rubio’s comments last week on FSU isolated a lot of Florida fans, his clarity and understanding of issues made me gain more respect for him, to the juxtaposition of the insanity  of Trump’s ideas. However, Rubio is not without wrongs; making an embarrassing factual error by claiming ISIS has invaded Libya, and then going on to say that the Sinai Peninsula is in Egypt, but the Sinai is in Egypt.

Later, in domestic issues, he says that criminals will use guns no matter what, and what is important to look at is why they are doing that violence.

“The number one issue of the federal government is to keep America safe.” With a stance like this, high hopes can be had for Marco Rubio, despite his constant unnecessary mentions of how Obama is the cause for all of our problems. Putin is just a smart leader, who is good at getting other countries on their side.

We can only hope that whoever is the next leader of America will make it great again regardless of whether or not it looks like the Reagan administration.
