Is the Bern Extinguished?

10/13 Democratic Presidential Debate

Bernie Sanders is much like a dinner at Chili’s. On paper it seems pretty good, but when placed on a hot plate, the result is much different than imagined. Flocks of young people, including myself, were drawn to Bernie’s outspoken views on income inequality, climate change, and college education. At a time when the GOP was fighting over how little the billionaires should be taxed, Sanders appeared to be the only glimmer of hope. However, during the debate Sanders began to sound like a broken record. Somehow, he related every one of the questions back to one of his domestic issues (income inequality, college education, and his hatred of PACS), and he danced around foreign policy as if it were an afterthought. The points he made were strong, but after hearing them for two hours it became readily apparent that Bernie’s platform lacked in depth foreign policy. Additionally, Hillary Clinton, prune juice enthusiast, attacked many of Bernie’s policies and viewpoints with little opposition. Sanders has said that he refuses to attack Clinton because he wants to focus on the issues. As noble as it is, there were various times that he could have gained major approval by defending himself or calling out Hillary’s big money campaign, yet he remained silent. As campaigning continues, Bernie Sanders needs to show the Democrats that he is not a weak, one (or three) trick pony, or he will surely be trampled by Hillary (and her emails).
