Lol, a Poem by Christopher King

lawl

Picture this, a scene, a boy in 10th grade, sitting alone, on a phone, at a lunch table
Another approaches him, thinking “well, if he needs a chuckle, I’m more than able”
The approaching boy sits down and tells a joke about bears
The sitting boy looks up, spits out a “heh”, and stares
A long 3 seconds of laugh-less silence later
The boy returns to his phone to look at some social app, his savior.

I tell this story to exemplify
Or rather, to rectify
A problem we currently have throughout many levels of societies
Be it, school, work, home, and several other varieties
A problem where one of the most basic forms of interaction
Is too difficult to express, digest, or invoke any sort of reaction

Now of course, this isn’t true for everyone
It’s super easy to joke with your peers and laugh and hope you’re never done
Though I speak of those you don’t know
Those that hear your funny story in chemistry and say “so?”
The reason we do this is up in the air
Whether it’s that we have no clue we’re doing it, or simply don’t care

A solution? Well there could be a few
Start thinking, “Hmm, maybe I should humor you”
It really can’t hurt, in a school, you all go to the same place
There’s no way you can’t find shared experience, like that time you both lost that car race
But while we’re talking about finish lines, pun intended
I really want to drive home the point, if you will, cement it

Think, do you ever feel friendless or lacking some joy?
Like “wow nobody likes me haha” or some other attention seeking ploy?
What if you had a friend in that class where you have no friends?
One that understands, and likes to joke about how hard it is to make ends?
I could go on and on with rhetorical remarks
But just take into account what I have said cause I promise, it’s not a shot in the dark

Because I promise, if you understand even just a bit of that rhyme filled list
You, and everyone else, will be laughing, instead of looking like this- :l
